Boneset (Eupatorium perfoliatum) is a bitter, traditional North American herb primarily used to induce sweating, reduce fevers, and relieve deep-seated muscle and bone aches associated with the flu.
Taste: Extremely bitter, sharp, earthly and distinctly medicinal. It carries a cooling astringent bite on the palate
Aroma: Pungent, dry, and plant heavy
Pairs well with: Peppermint/ Spearmint , licorice root, Stevia leaf and lemon peel.
Primary Actions of Boneset
Diaphoretic: Promotes intense perspiration to help break fevers.
Immunostimulant: Enhances white blood cell phagocytosis to fight infections.
Anti-inflammatory: Calms swollen mucous membranes and joint tissues.
Emetic/Laxative: Induces vomiting or purging when taken in large doses.
Effects Across Major Body Systems
Immune System: Stimulates pathogen destruction via active polysaccharides and sesquiterpene lactones.
Respiratory System: Clears upper respiratory congestion, loosens phlegm, and eases bronchitis or flu symptoms.
Musculoskeletal System: Relieves severe bone, limb, and muscle pain ("breakbone" aches) linked to viral fevers.
Digestive System: Acts as a bitter tonic in small amounts to stimulate gastric and gallbladder secretions; large doses cause vomiting or diarrhea. []
Remaining Systems (Cardiovascular, Integumentary, Nervous, Urinary, Endocrine, Lymphatic, Reproductive, and Special Senses): While traditional or folk uses claim minor support for circulation, fluid balance, or lymphatic drainage, there is no robust clinical evidence showing direct, functional benefit across these specific remaining systems.
Cautions and Safety Warnings
Toxicity Risk: Contains trace pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which can cause liver damage with excessive or long-term use.
Gastrointestinal Distress: High concentrations frequently induce nausea, vomiting, and purging.
Contraindications: Avoid use entirely during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or by individuals with pre-existing liver or kidney disease, or allergies to plants in the Asteraceae (daisy) family.
Duration: Limit use strictly to short-term illness support (1–2 weeks) under professional guidance.
