Cautions & Side Effects

  • Allergic Reactions: Chamomile belongs to the Asteraceae/Compositae daisy family. People allergic to ragweed, chrysanthemums, or marigolds may experience severe allergic reactions.
  • Pregnancy & Breastfeeding: Chamomile tea in normal dietary quantities is usually considered safe. However, in concentrated forms or very high amounts, it may stimulate uterine contractions. Consult an OB-GYN before use.
  • Blood-Thinning Medications: Chamomile contains natural coumarins. Concurrent use with blood thinners like warfarin or aspirin can increase the risk of bleeding.
  • Sedatives & Anesthesia: Because chamomile naturally depresses the central nervous system, consuming it with prescription sedatives (e.g., benzodiazepines) or alcohol can cause excessive drowsiness.
  • Hormonal Influence: Chamomile may act like estrogen in the body. Those with hormone-sensitive conditions (such as breast or uterine cancer) should exercise caution and seek advice.
