Cramp bark (Viburnum opulus) is a traditional herbal remedy best known for its ability to relax smooth and skeletal muscle tissue.
Taste: Bitter, earthy, woody, and slightly astringent.
Pairs with: Cinnamon, ginger, peppermint, fennel, and orange peel.

Primary Medicinal Actions
Antispasmodic / Spasmolytic: Calms and relaxes overactive or spasming muscles.
Nervine Relaxant: Soothes nervous system tension that manifests physically.
Astringent: Tones and tightens mucous membranes and tissues.
Anti-inflammatory: Helps reduce localized tissue swelling and pain.

Effects Across the 12 Body Systems
While a single herb does not directly treat every bodily system, cramp bark’s primary relaxing and antispasmodic actions focus heavily on organs rich in smooth muscle.
1. Reproductive System
Function: Regulates hormonal cycles and manages uterine contractions.
Benefit: Relieves painful menstrual cramps (dysmenorrhea) and uterine spasms by relaxing the myometrium. Traditionally used for afterpains and pelvic tension.
2. Muscular System
Function: Enables movement and controls voluntary/involuntary contractions.
Benefit: Eases skeletal muscle cramps, general spasms from physical strain, and stubborn knots in the limbs or back.
3. Nervous System
Function: Coordinates sensory and motor signals.
Benefit: Acts as a mild sedative and nervine, easing nervous irritability and stress-induced physical tension.
4. Digestive / Gastrointestinal System
Function: Processes food and expels waste.
Benefit: Relieves cramping associated with intestinal colic, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and mild digestive upset.
5. Respiratory System
Function: Exchanges oxygen and carbon dioxide.
Benefit: Helps calm bronchial spasms associated with persistent coughs, bronchitis, or mild asthma flare-ups.
6. Cardiovascular System
Function: Circulates blood throughout the body.
Benefit: May help relax peripheral blood vessels, modestly supporting healthy blood pressure levels.
7. Urinary System
Function: Filters blood and eliminates liquid waste.
Benefit: Relieves spasmodic contractions of the bladder and helps ease the painful gripping sensations of renal colic.
8–12. Other Systems (Immune, Endocrine, Integumentary, Lymphatic, Skeletal)
Function: Maintain baseline immunity, structural support, and protective barriers.
Benefit: These systems experience indirect benefits primarily through reduced systemic inflammation and lowered physical stress. Historical traditions also note topical or systemic use for joint and muscle discomfort linked to the skeletal/immune interface.

Cautions and Side Effects
Aspirin Sensitivity: Cramp bark contains natural salicylates; individuals with allergies or sensitivities to aspirin should avoid it.
Blood Thinners: It contains coumarins (such as scopoletin), which may theoretically interact with anticoagulant medications.
Pregnancy and Lactation: Consult a healthcare provider before use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. While historically used for late-pregnancy cramping, safety data remain limited.
High Doses: Excessive consumption can cause mild gastrointestinal upset, nausea, or vomiting.
