Gravel root (Eutrochium purpureum) is a traditional herbal remedy best known for acting on the urinary and reproductive systems. Its primary medicinal actions are diuretic and anti-inflammatory, but it carries significant cautions due to toxic compounds.
Steep time: 10-20 minutes
Taste: Bitter Bite
Pairs well with; Lemon and Honey. Marshmallow Root or Licorice Root. Cinnamon bark or Ginger Root
Primary Actions and Target Body Systems
While herbalists traditionally assign gravel root functions across multiple tissues, its actual verified physiological impact is concentrated in very few areas:
Urinary System: Acts as a diuretic to increase urine flow and assist in flushing out urinary gravel or minor renal stones.
Reproductive System: Traditionally used as a tonic to soothe uterine irritation and pelvic congestion.
Skeletal and Muscular Systems: Historically utilized to ease chronic joint discomfort and rheumatic swelling.
(Note: Gravel root does not actively target or treat the remaining body systems—such as the respiratory, nervous, cardiovascular, digestive, endocrine, lymphatic, integumentary, or special senses—though older traditional texts made broad claims of general systemic cleansing).
Cautions and Safety Risks
Liver Toxicity: Contains hepatotoxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) that can cause severe liver damage or failure; uncertified products are considered unsafe for oral use.
Pregnancy and Lactation: Strongly contraindicated during pregnancy due to historical abortifacient risks and potential harm to the infant.
Drug Interactions: May interact negatively with diuretic medications or alter the body's processing of lithium.
