Cautions & Drug Interactions
Hawthorn is a powerful herb that should be used with care, especially if you have pre-existing conditions or are taking prescription medications.
  • Heart Medications: Hawthorn interacts significantly with medications for heart conditions, including digoxin, beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, and nitrates. Combining them can cause blood pressure to drop too low or dangerously amplify the effects of the heart drugs.
  • Blood Thinners: Because it affects blood flow and platelet function, combining hawthorn with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs (such as aspirin, warfarin, or clopidogrel) may increase the risk of bruising and bleeding.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Hawthorn should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as it can stimulate the uterus.
  • Surgery: Due to its effects on bleeding and blood pressure, discontinue the use of hawthorn at least 2 weeks before a scheduled surgery.
  • Medication Monitoring: If you have severe heart failure or chronic hypertension, consult a healthcare professional before self-treating with hawthorn.
