Saw Palmetto is an herbal extract primarily used to support prostate and urinary tract health, and to reduce hair loss by blocking the conversion of testosterone into DHT. Its active fatty acids and phytosterols primarily act on hormonal and inflammatory pathways throughout the body.
Effects on the 12 Body Systems
  • Integumentary System: Inhibits 5-alpha-reductase, preventing testosterone from converting to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that miniaturizes hair follicles. Action slows hair thinning and treats androgenic alopecia.
  • Reproductive System: Counters excess DHT and regulates free testosterone, potentially supporting male and female libido, sperm quality, and egg production.
  • Urinary System: Its phytosterols reduce prostate inflammation and exert relaxing effects on smooth muscle tissue. Action alleviates lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) like frequent nighttime urination (nocturia) and weak urine stream associated with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH).
  • Endocrine System: Possesses antiandrogenic and mild antiestrogenic properties. Action helps stabilize testosterone and can inhibit the pituitary release of prolactin.
  • Immune System: Flavonoids and polysaccharides modulate the immune system and neutralize free radicals.
  • Lymphatic System: Exhibits anti-edema and anti-inflammatory properties, reducing swelling in tissues associated with an enlarged prostate.
  • Digestive System: Generally well-tolerated, but can have a mild demulcent effect in the gastrointestinal tract, providing a soothing layer to mucous membranes.
  • Nervous System: Has mild antispasmodic/spasmolytic properties. Action helps reduce muscle tension and contributes to the supplement’s use in chronic pelvic pain management.
  • Circulatory System: Exhibits mild anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Muscular System: Anti-inflammatory properties may mildly reduce muscular and localized pelvic discomfort.
  • Respiratory System: Historically used in traditional herbalism to soothe coughs and respiratory irritation, though scientific backing for this is minimal.
  • Skeletal System: No direct clinical benefits, although some research speculates phytosterols can play a supportive role in overall bone turnover and health.
Cautions & Interactions
  • Bleeding Risks: Saw palmetto may slow blood clotting. It should be avoided by individuals taking anticoagulants (blood thinners like warfarin) or antiplatelet drugs (like aspirin) unless supervised by a doctor.
  • Hormone Medications: Because it acts on androgen and estrogen pathways, it can potentially interfere with hormonal contraceptives (birth control pills) and Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT).
  • Pregnancy & Breastfeeding: Should be completely avoided by pregnant women, those who may become pregnant, and nursing mothers.
  • Surgery: Stop taking the supplement at least 2 weeks before any scheduled surgery to avoid excessive bleeding complications.
  • Side Effects: Infrequent but possible mild side effects include nausea, dizziness, constipation, diarrhea, and headaches
