Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) is a potent bitter herb known for supporting digestion, fighting parasites, and reducing inflammation, though its active chemical thujone carries significant neurotoxic risks if misused.
Steep Time: 5-10 minutes
Taste: Strongly bitter
Pairs well with: peppermint leaf, caraway or fennel seed. Raw honey or Lemon peels
Actions and Key Properties
Antiparasitic: Traditional use for expelling intestinal worms and roundworms.
Bitter Tonic: Stimulates taste receptors to increase saliva, stomach acid, and digestive enzymes.
Anti-inflammatory: Helps suppress cytokine activity to reduce joint and tissue swelling.
Antimicrobial: Exhibits lab-tested activity against certain bacteria and fungi.
Effects Across Select Body Systems
Digestive System: Stimulates appetite, eases bloating, and boosts gastric juices.
Nervous System: High doses or concentrated thujone can overstimulate nerves, causing tremors, vertigo, or seizures.
Immune System: May modulate inflammatory responses, but unverified for broad immune boosting.
Reproductive System: Acts as a uterine stimulant and can trigger contractions.
Other Systems (Cardiovascular, Integumentary, Urinary): Minimal direct benefit; heavy systemic overdose risks heart stress, skin rashes, and kidney strain.
Cautions and Safety
Duration: Never use continuously for more than 4 weeks.
Pregnancy & Lactation: Strictly contraindicated due to the risk of miscarriage or uterine contractions.
Contraindications: Avoid if you have epilepsy or seizure disorders, stomach/intestinal ulcers, kidney disease, or ragweed/Asteraceae allergies.
