Angelica root provides warming and stimulating support primarily affecting the digestive, respiratory, and circulatory systems. While traditional herbalism attributes broad systemic influences to it, modern science views its actions through specific active compounds like furanocoumarins and phthalides.

Steep Time: 10-12 minutes
Taste:  Earthy, woody, and bitter
Pairs Well With: Licorice root, marshmallow root or astragalus root.  Cinnamon sticks, ginger root, cardamon, or cloves.  Orange peel or lemon peel.  Peppermint leaves or chamomile flowers.

Key Body Systems and Functions
Digestive System: Stimulates digestive juices, relieves gas (carminative), eases stomach cramps, and promotes appetite.
Respiratory System: Acts as a stimulating expectorant to clear mucus and ease chronic coughs or bronchitis.
Circulatory and Cardiovascular Systems: Promotes peripheral blood flow, warms extremities, and reduces platelet aggregation.
Reproductive System: Helps regulate menstrual flow and eases uterine cramping (often associated with Angelica sinensis or Dong Gui).
Immune System: Exhibits mild antimicrobial, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties.
Principal Herbal Actions
Carminative: Relieves gas and intestinal colic.
Expectorant: Clears lung congestion.
Antispasmodic: Relaxes smooth muscle tension in the gut and uterus.
Circulatory Stimulant: Drives internal warmth and fluid movement.
Cautions and Contraindications
Photosensitivity: Contains furanocoumarins (psoralens) that increase skin sensitivity to UV sunlight and raise the risk of severe sunburn or photodermatitis.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Contraindicated during pregnancy due to uterine-stimulating properties that may induce contractions.
Blood Thinning: Can inhibit platelet aggregation and interact adversely with anticoagulant medications, increasing bleeding risks.
Overheating/Hot Conditions: Should be avoided by individuals with an over-heated constitution or acute inflammatory conditions (like peptic ulcers or acute gastroenteritis), as its warming energy can aggravate them.
