Juniper berries are potent, antioxidant-rich botanicals widely used in traditional herbalism. They are valued for their antiseptic, diuretic, and anti-inflammatory properties. However, because their concentrated volatile oils can cause organ strain, they require careful, short-term use.

Steep Time: 5-7 minutes
Taste: Piney, woody and peppery spicy warmth
Pairs Well With:  Dried orange peel, lemon peel or grapefruit peel.  Cinnamon, cloves, ginger root or cardamon.  Rosemary, Thyme or lavender as well as rosehips to enhance the brew.  Sweetners such as honey or maple syrup.
Effects on the 12 Body Systems
Herbal and traditional practices associate juniper berries with the following actions across the primary body systems:
  • Urinary System: Acts as a strong diuretic and antiseptic. It increases urine production to help flush out bacteria, aiding in the management of minor urinary tract infections (UTIs).
  • Digestive System: Functions as a carminative and stomachic. It stimulates stomach bile secretion and digestive acids, relieving bloating, indigestion, and excess gas.
  • Integumentary System (Skin): Provides astringent and antibacterial properties. Topically diluted essential oils are used to manage blemishes, rashes, eczema, and to support wound regeneration.
  • Immune System: Delivers antimicrobial and antifungal effects. The high concentration of flavonoids and Vitamin C helps protect cells from oxidative stress and free radical damage.
  • Musculoskeletal System: Acts as an anti-inflammatory and mild analgesic. It is traditionally used to soothe joint discomfort, arthritis, and gout by improving circulation and easing stiffness.
  • Nervous System: Possesses neuroprotective and mild sedative properties. Aromatherapy using juniper essential oil is believed to reduce mental stress, ease anxiety, and promote relaxation.
  • Cardiovascular System: Contains compounds like flavonoids and monoterpenes that may help support heart health, manage cholesterol levels, and balance blood pressure.
  • Endocrine System: Studied for its hypoglycemic effects. It has been used traditionally to help balance blood sugar levels, particularly in mild, late-onset diabetes.
  • Respiratory System: Functions as an expectorant and balsamic agent. Steam inhalation is often used to open bronchial passages and help expel mucus during seasonal ailments.
  • Reproductive System: Acts as a uterine stimulant. Herbalists sometimes use it to promote uterine tone and stimulate delayed menstrual periods.
  • Lymphatic/Circulatory System: Stimulates blood circulation and sweating, aiding in the removal of metabolic toxins from the body.
  • Digestive/Excretory System (Parasitic): Traditionally employed as an anthelmintic agent to assist the body in expelling intestinal worms.
Critical Cautions & Safety
Due to the strong, stimulating action of juniper's volatile oils (such as terpinen-4-ol), the following warnings apply:
  • Kidney Disease: Do not use if you suffer from acute kidney inflammation or chronic kidney disease, as it can cause severe urinary tract and kidney irritation.
  • Pregnancy: Strictly avoid using juniper supplements, berries, or oils during pregnancy. It stimulates uterine contractions and has a historical association with abortifacient/antifertility effects.
  • Diabetes Medications: Use with caution if you are taking medications for blood sugar, as juniper’s hypoglycemic action may cause blood glucose to drop too low.
  • Diuretics: Taking juniper supplements alongside prescription water pills (diuretics) may lead to excessive dehydration and electrolyte imbalance.
  • Short-Term Use: Do not use juniper as a concentrated medicine or supplement continuously for more than 4 weeks to prevent liver and kidney toxicity.
  • Topical Irritation: Concentrated juniper essential oil should always be diluted with a carrier oil before skin application and should not be applied to broken skin.
